United approach a must to fight terrorism

Anisul Huq tells meeting of Commonwealth law ministers in the Bahamas

Terming terrorism a global phenomenon, Law Minister Anisul Huq has underlined the necessity of a unified approach to condemn and combat this scourge.

He also stressed the need for taking preventive actions, educating people and engaging community and religious leaders in this regard.

He was delivering a speech at the three-day meeting of Commonwealth law ministers at Nassau of the Bahamas, says a law ministry press release.

The minister provided details of laws enacted by the government for conservation and restoration of natural resources, restricting emission of pollutants and effluents.

He mentioned that despite being one of the lowest "greenhouse gas" emitters, Bangladesh, as a responsible member of the international community has taken measures for climate change mitigation and adaptation.

He explained how the disaster preparedness and management model worked in Bangladesh and how it has helped bring down the human fatality rate to near zero and expedited government's response time to assist the affected people who had suffered material damages.

On the sidelines of the ministerial event, the law minister also had a meeting with the Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland. The minister reiterated Bangladesh's commitment to the Commonwealth values and processes and also thanked the secretary general for the message issued praising Bangladesh government for the assistance provided to the forcibly displaced Rohingyas of Myanmar.

The secretary general lauded the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, particularly for championing girls' education, women's empowerment and in building a harmonious society, the release added.
