Under-construction roof collapses on workers

One killed, seven injured in Gazipur; another dies in Ctg

One worker was killed and seven others injured as the roof of an under-construction resort collapsed in Sreepur upazila of Gazipur yesterday.

A portion of the second floor of Sahara Resort crumbled around 12:30pm when the workers were working down there, said Md Akhteruzzaman, deputy assistant director of Gazipur Fire Service.

The resort is owned by Vision Group, he added.

Three units of Sreepur and Joydevpur fire offices conducted a rescue operation till 4:00pm. They recovered the body of Fakir Ali, 23, of Dewanganj upazila in Jamalpur.

The injured were taken to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital, and two of them were shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Fire officials said the reason behind the collapse could not be known immediately.

The Gazipur district administration formed a six-member probe committee and asked it to submit the report within five working days.

Last year, 1,242 workers died due to lack of safety at workplace, says a report by Occupational Safety, Health and Environment Foundation. Of them, 179 died in the construction sector.

Meanwhile, a worker was killed as a sheet of glass fell down on him while he was loading those on a truck in Chittagong city's Kaptai Rastar Matha area yesterday, reports our staff correspondent. The deceased, Harun-ur-Rashid, 50, hails from Agrabad area.
