Trial proceedings of 18 violence cases against 3 BNP leaders stayed

The High Court today stayed the trial proceedings of 18 cases filed against BNP leaders --Selima Rahman, Aman Ullah Aman and Habib -un-Nabi Khan Sohel –- in connection with vandalism and arson attacks in 2013.

The court also issued 18 separate rules asking the government to explain in four weeks why the trial proceedings of the cases should not be scrapped.

The bench of Justice Md Miftah Uddin Choudhury and Justice ANM Bashir Ullah came up with the orders and rules following 18 separate petitions filed by the accused BNP leaders seeking to quash of the cases’ proceedings against them, Deputy Attorney General Shaikh AKM Moniruzzaman Kabir told The Daily Star.

The government will appeal to the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court against the HC’s stay orders, he said.

DAG Moniruzzaman said police filed 12 cases against Selima Rahman and six cases against Aman Ullah Aman and Habib -un-Nabi Khan Sohel with different police stations in Dhaka and Keraniganj on charges of vandalism and arson attacks during the anti-government agitation enforced by the BNP-led alliance on different days in 2013.

The accused leaders are now on bail in the cases, he added.
