5.5 Tripura quake shakes Bangladesh

Mild tremors jolted Dhaka and other parts of the country this afternoon caused by a shallow earthquake in the Tripura bordering region.

US Geological Survey pinpointed the 5.5 magnitude earthquake at 19 kilometres northeast of Ambasa region of neighbouring Tripura state of India.

Dhaka city dwellers felt the tremor around 3:09pm. The tremors initially felt were dim, followed by some strong ones before dying out. The tremors lasted for about a minute.

Clocked by USGS at 3:09pm Bangladesh time, the earthquake had a depth of 36 kilometres.

According to USGS, 99 percent of the people in and around the region should be safe after the 5.5 magnitude earthquake.
