Traffic constable ‘beaten up’ by auto-rickshaw drivers

A group of some 12 auto-rickshaw drivers beat up a traffic police constable allegedly for seizing a battery-run auto-rickshaw at Meradia of Khilgaon in Dhaka this evening.

The incident took place around 5:30pm, locals told The Daily Star.

The victim, Ashraful Islam, 30, said, “A gang of auto-rickshaw drivers attacked me after I seized a battery-run auto-rickshaw and detained its driver.”

“It’s unlawful to drive battery-run auto-rickshaws in the capital,” he added.

The miscreants immediately fled from the spot after injuring Ashraful.

However, his companion, a member of the Bangladesh Ansar, was not attacked.

Ashraful was later rescued by police and taken to Rajarbagh Police Line Hospital.

He was transferred to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 8:30pm.

“We are trying to catch the miscreants,” said Mostafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Khilgaon Model Police Station.
