Extortion 'by Police'

Tough actions will be taken: IGP

Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque yesterday warned of tough punishment if any allegation of extortion is found against any police personnel.

At a meeting on law and order and traffic management ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr at the Police Headquarters, the IGP also asked police officials to stop extortion.

A meeting source said during Eid last year, some police personnel were caught when they were extorting money from people in the capital.

Referring to the video clips of that incident played during the meeting, the police chief asked the Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner to take tough actions against such activities.

The IGP also instructed the officials to stop movement of improvised motorised three-wheelers and battery-run auto-rickshaws on highways to avert road accidents and keep the roads free from gridlock.

In addition, he asked highway and district police to remain alert for preventing highway robbery.

An instruction also came to conduct mobile courts against adulterated and chemical-contaminated food, including fruits and iftar items.

Top officials from the Police Headquarters, metropolitan cities and districts, rail and industrial police, and representatives from different intelligence agencies, Dhaka city corporations, and fire service attended the meeting.

The meeting also discussed security during Eid congregations and actions against fake currency, pickpocket and doping gangs.

The IGP also warned that if anyone harms the communal harmony by posting comments and photos on the internet, quick legal actions would be taken.
