Surprise gift for freshman students

The Zoology department of Dhaka University took a unique initiative in association with the Shabuj Bagan Society to give tree saplings as orientation gift to the freshman students yesterday.

The department gifted the students of 2017-2018 academic sessions with “Morning Glory” and “Long Banana Chilli” saplings to promote the use of natural fertiliser and raise awareness about global warming.

This was followed by a power-point presentation by the Department where students were shown concepts of organic and chemical agriculture and the differences between them.

Professor Md Anwarul Haque, chairperson of the department said that the Shabuj Bagan Society was requested to hold a seminar in the department for the students to know how organic agricultural materials can enrich the sector in Bangladesh.

He expressed hope that farmers of remote areas will also come to know about the organic agriculture from the students of the zoology department.

The Shabuj Bagan Society, initially a facebook group which later started spreading their work outside the virtual world started its journey on October 15, 2016.

German expatriate Meerza Al Razi, took the initiative to spread the idea of organic agriculture and raise awareness about global warming among the general people.

We encourage Dhaka dwellers to start gardening on their terrace and balcony and we also provide technical support to those who are eager and help to extend rare breeds”, said Badrul Hyder Bepari, admin of the facebook group.

“As of now, we have distributed as many as 60 thousands tree saplings across the country in the last one and a half year”, he added. The voluntary organisation, comprising of more than one lakh members, also gives award to the best gardeners across the country every year.
