4 killed, 3 missing, hundreds of houses damaged, trees uprooted

After a prolonged sweltering heat sweeping across the country, taking its toll on the public, it looks like now the high temperatures could fall to some extent with the nor'wester on Sunday night.

Sunday's storm, however, rampaged through many areas, leaving at least four people dead, destroying hundreds of houses and uprooting trees and electric pillars.

In Narsindhi, with the strong wind a giant bill board broke down on transport worker Awlad Hossain, 25, while he was covering a salt-laden truck at Natun Bus Stand area, leaving him dead on the spot.

In Natore, Atiqur Rahman, 16, was killed by lightning at Biram Chotpaka village in Bagatipara upazila when he was working in a field in the area.

In Chandpur, an elderly woman named Samsunnahar of Balithuya village in Faridganj upazila died while a tree branch fell all of a sudden on her.

The storm destroyed hundreds of houses, and uprooted trees and electric pillars in the district till yesterday evening.

Meanwhile, a teenage boy and two workers went missing during the storm.

In Narayanganj, Rakib, 15, went missing in the Sitalakkha River when his boat capsized in the river.

Search for the missing boy is on.

In Manikganj, two workers--Kuddus Pramanik, 55, and Rahij Pramanik, 50, both hailing from Pabna district--went missing as a soil-laden trawler capsized in the Padma River near Paturia ghat in Shibalaya upazila owing to the nor'wester; reports BSS.

Rescue operation is underway, said Md Shamim Hossain, in-charge of Paturia River Police Outpost.

In the same district, one Rinku Miah was killed while a large chunk of a building's wall fell on him in Balichar area of Sirajdikhan upazila.

According to the metrological department, the country's north-eastern and south-eastern regions may see sudden flash flood in this month.
