Sundarbans robber gang surrenders

'Zahangir Bahini' also hands over 31 arms, 1,507 bullets

Twenty members of the Sundarbans-based infamous robber gang "Zahangir Bahini", including its ringleader, yesterday surrendered at Rab-8 headquarters in Barisal in presence of Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.

Zahangir Sikari, 38, along with other members of the gang also handed over 31 arms and 1,507 bullets to Rab at the battalion's office in Rupatali area. 

Rab-8 Commander Lt Col Anowar uz Zaman said "Zahangir Bahani" was the biggest gang in the Sundarbans area.

Benazir Ahmed, director general of Rab; Sheikh Md Maruf Hasan, DIG of Barisal Range; SM Ruhul Amin,  Commissioner of Barisal Metropolitan Police; Dr Gazi Md Saifuzzaman, Deputy Commissioner of Barisal, were present in the programme with the Rab-8 commander in the chair.

Including the 20, a total of 92 members of nine Sundarbans-based robber gangs surrendered to law enforcers with 195 arms, 10,143 bullets in the last eight months, said Major Adnan, media spokesperson of Rab-8.

Addressing the programme, home minister said the government will ensure safety and security of the Sundarbans region at any cost. Urging other robber gangs to surrender, Kamal said the robbers who have surrendered and are not accused of murder and rape would be rehabilitated so that they could go back to their normal lives.
