Suhrawardy hospital struggling with dengue patients

Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in Dhaka is struggling to attend the patients with dengue infection due to its limited capacity.

Around 190 patients are admitted at the hospital against its actual accommodation capacity of 60.

Among the 190 patients, at least 50 per cent of them are infected by dengue fever and are now being treated at the child ward of the hospital.

While visiting the hospital, our staff correspondent found that many dengue infected patients were lying on floors, veranda, walkways and other places in the hospital.

Besides, it was seen that doctors are engaged in providing treatment keeping two to three dengue infected patients in a single bed at the child ward.   

The hospital is full to the brim with patients causing difficulty for doctors, nurses and patients to move around inside the hospital, our correspondent found.

While talking to this correspondent, Prof Uttam Kumar Barua, director of the hospital, said a total of 777 dengue infected patients were admitted to the hospital in the last two months.

Of them, 512 have been released after their complete recovery from the fever while two have died, he said.

Today a total of 238 dengue infected patients were admitted to the hospital, Barua said.

“We are facing bed crisis as well as saline for the dengue patients. Despite this, we are providing our highest level of effort for the treatment of the patients,” he said.

Apart from this, a good number of senior students of the medical college have been engaged in providing services to the patients, the director also said.

The patients who are infected with dengue fever are being tested free of cost, he added.
