Sugarcane producers no need to pay tax on communications infrastructure

Bill placed in parliament

The Sugar (Road Development Cess) Repeal Act, 2018 bill was placed yesterday in parliament to exempt the sugarcane producers and sellers from paying tax on construction of communications infrastructure in the areas adjacent to sugar mills.

Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu placed the bill in the House with Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.

The bill was sent to the parliamentary standing committee on industries ministry for scrutiny and the body will report back to the House within two weeks.

To bring all activities under the act, the proposed law was made annulling the Sugar (Road Development Cess) Ordinance, 1960 which was promulgated for realising cess from those supplying sugarcanes to sugar mills.

The industries minister said the government preferred the communication infrastructure across the country so that the sugar mill authorities have no mandatory to construct, develop and maintain roads, bridges and culverts.
