Sub-sector commander Ziauddin passes away

Maj (retd) Ziauddin Ahmed, sub-sector commander of Sector No-9 during the 1971 Liberation War, passed away at a Singaporean hospital yesterday morning.

On July 1, he was admitted to Square Hospital in Dhaka following sickness.

Later, he was taken to Singapore for better treatment and was admitted to General Hospital, said Shahanur Rahman Shamim, one of his nephews.

Ziauddin, chairman of Dubla Fisheries Group, was born in Pirojpur town in 1950. His father Aftabuddin Ahmed was a chairman of Pirojpur municipality.

When the Liberation War began, Ziauddin returned to Bangladesh from Pakistan army. Afterwards, he joined the Liberation War and performed his duty as the sub-sector commander.

Ziauddin was known as the "king without a crown" of the Sundarbans from where he fought against the Pakistani army in the southern region of Bangladesh.

He was elected as the chairman of Pirojpur municipality in 1989. He established a college in the town named after his father.

BSS reports, President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday condoled the death of  Ziauddin Ahmed.
