Student 'beaten' by BCL men at SUST

A student of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (Sust) was allegedly beaten by a group of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) men, on the campus yesterday. 

The injured, Juwel Rana, (21), a third year student of mathematics department, was admitted to the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College.  

Witnesses said, Juwel and two others were eating lunch at a shop on the campus, when theatre activist Jahid, also a student of business administration, accidentally pushed BCL activist Ali Hasan.

Ali, also a student of English department, locked into an altercation with Jahid and slapped him, to which Juwel, the general secretary of Dik Theatre, a campus-based theatre group, protested. 

He went on to report the incident to the university proctor Prof Zahir Uddin Ahmed and the proctor assured to look into the matter.

Later, a group of around 15 BCL men swooped on Juwel in front of the university centre, witnesses report.

Denying the culprits' direct involvement with Sust BCL unit, President Ruhul Amin and General Secretary Imran Khan said, Ali is not an active member and they will not take any responsibility of his actions.

Ali Hasan said that it was a misunderstanding and he will communicate with the victims to solve the matter.

Meanwhile, Prof Zahir said authority will take proper legal action in this regard after probing the matter.
