Left-leaning student organisations today clamped a strike at Dhaka University protesting the “police brutality” during the shutdown for Sundarbans on January 26.

Most of the classes at Arts Building and Social Science Building were abandoned as the activists of Progressive Students’ Alliance put both buildings under lock and key.

After a short rally at Oporajeyo Bangla premises, where condemnations were voiced over the police brutality on hartal activists and journalists, they paraded around the campus.

During the pro-strike march, the activists were faced with an impediment where scuffles took place with some other students. The strike sponsors blamed the impediment on ruling party’s student front Bangladesh Chhatra League.

“Despite the scuffles, we marched around Dhaka University campus with demands for punishment over the brutal attack on activists and journalists during January 26 hartal,” said Salman Siddique, general secretary of Socialist Students’ Front.
