Stop earth filling in Sandhya river: HC

The High Court yesterday directed the government to stop earth filling and encroachment as well as demolish the structures on the bank of Sandhya river in Barisal in four months.

Responding to a writ petition, it also directed the authorities concerned to demarcate its boundary and prepare a list of the people, who have illegally grabbed the river land, in these four months.

Seeking necessary order on the government to save the river, Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh filed the petition in May, 2009 stating that a portion of the river was being filled with dirt for a government housing project for the landless, said the petitioner's lawyer Manzill Murshid.
