A stalwart of Bangla literature

Booklovers visiting a section of the fair ground at Suhrawardy Udyan yesterday, dedicated to the memory of one of the most influential writers of the country Syed Shamsul Haq.

Very few can equal the legacy he left behind. Be it stories, verses or plays -- his love for words and sentences and above all the country illuminated his works.

His versatility not only mesmerised countless of readers, but also remained as an inspiration to all.

Though the country lost this prolific poet, lyricist and writer in 2016, Syed Shamsul Haq lives on through his works.

As a tribute to the extraordinary soul, a chattar (premises), for the first time, has been dedicated to the memory of the litterateur at the Suhrawardy Udyan during this year's Amar Ekushey Granthamela.

“Bangla Academy had an intimate relation with Syed Shamsul Haq. He will be remembered as a stalwart of Bangla literature,” said Bangla Academy Director General Shamsuzzaman Khan yesterday.

It is quite difficult to specify him as a writer. He was one of the most eminent contemporary Bangla poets, a prolific short story writer, novelist, playwright and lyricist.

His literary works are studied at schools, colleges and universities.

“Nuruldiner Sara Jibon”, “Nishiddho Loban” and “Payer Awaj Paoa Jay” are few of his timeless creations that still inspire all.

“Nishiddho Loban” was adapted into an award-winning movie, “Guerrilla”, directed by Nasiruddin Yousuff.

At the book fair yesterday, many were seen buying his books to enrich their literary experiences.

“I am an avid reader of his works,” said Hojaifa Al Mamduh, a student of Dhaka University. He said “Khelaram Khele Ja” and “Keranio Doure Chilo” are among his favourites.

While talking to some of the publishers, they said they still remembered Syed Haq.

“During the book fair, he used to visit our stall regularly. We published many of his books,” said Liaquat Ullah of “Student Ways Publication”.

“He is unique and he is missed,” said Liaquat.

A book titled, “Smritir Nokkhotray Syed Shamsul Haq”, written by his wife Anwara Syed Haq has been published by “Student Ways” this year. A collection of short stories, especially on the Liberation War, written by Syed Haq is also drawing readers' attention at the stall.

At the fair, many publishers are selling books written on him by various writers.

“Smriti Sottar Syed Haq” written by Piash Mazid is one such book. On the ninth day yesterday, 344 new books arrived.
