Sreemangal gets 2nd tea auction centre in country

The much-awaited tea auction centre, only the second one in the country, for the greater Sylhet region was inaugurated at Sreemangal in Moulvibazar by Finance Minister AMA Muhit yesterday.

Even though more than half or 93 out of 162 tea estates in the country are located in Moulvibazar, the tea from Moulvibazar used to be taken to the country's lone tea auction centre in Chittagong.

According to annual tea production index, 60,000 metric tonnes out of the country's total tea production of 70,000 metric tonnes was produced in greater Sylhet last year. And the tea estates in Moulvibazar produced 75 percent of the tea produced in the Sylhet region.

Earlier in the day, the finance minister inaugurated a rubber treatment plant at Isabpur of Sreemangal.
