'Some quarters' giving false info on country's progress

The Awami League-led government has made progress in many social and economic indicators and earned recognition at home and abroad, but “some quarters” are trying to mislead the people about the country's development, speakers said at a press conference yesterday.

They said if the people are given false information, the contribution of the ruling party would go in vain, and this would also dent the country's image.

In this regard, Prof Abdul Mannan Choudhury, vice-chancellor of World University of Bangladesh, referred to the statements of some BNP leaders who earlier said that democracy and good governance have been destroyed in the country as the ruling party has indulged in misdeeds and mismanagement.

Prof Mannan said Bangladesh has made strides in achieving sustainable development, particularly in information technology, per capita income and average life-expectancy, but the people may get confused due to false information.

The press conference was organised by Bangladesh Heritage Foundation (BHF) at Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka.

Masud Ahmed, former comptroller and auditor general of Bangladesh, said the government is willing to strengthen transparency; that's why it is sharing information on websites.

Wali-ur Rahman, founder chairman of BHF, also spoke.
