Society’s apathy to rights issues growing

Says Sultana Kamal

Noted human rights activist Advocate Sultana Kamal yesterday said although Bangladesh is progressing in different sectors, a “disinterested attitude” still lingers toward human rights in the society.

“Those whose rights are being violated do not protest in fear of landing into a new trouble,” said Sultana Kamal, also the founding president of newly formed human right organisation Manabadhikar Shongskriti Foundation (MSF), at its introductory ceremony.

MSF aims to operate with the mission to promote human rights culture in the society in collaboration with government and non-government organisations (NGO).

Speaking at the programme she expressed concern over the gradual loss in people to raise voices and growing apathy towards protest for human rights violation.

Rejecting the allegation that human rights is borrowed from western culture, the right activist said fundamental freedom for all is universally recognised as it talks about the rights of the people.

People need to raise their voices and protest against any human rights violation to keep the country free from negative forces such as communal chaos, she added.

National Human Rights Commission Chairman Kazi Reazul Hoque echoed that human rights are fundamental freedom for all and it should be ensured.

MSF can be reached by email at msfhr9@gmail.com and its office is at Sanjher Maya, house-15, road-32, Dhanmondi in the capital.
