Six get life term for murder

A Chittagong court yesterday sentenced six persons to life in jail for killing a student after abduction in Patiya upazila of Chittagong in 1991.

The convicts are Mahbul Alam, Habibur Rahman, Aminul Haque, Milon Barua, Abul Kashem and Nurul Alam.

Chittagong Public Safety (Jononirapotta) Tribunal Judge also Special District and Session Judge Sayeda Hosne Ara delivered the verdict, said Public Prosecutor Jahangir Alam.

The court also sentenced the four and one Sirajul Islam to three years in jail under section 201 of Penal Code.

Meanwhile, the court also acquitted four persons -- Yunus, Sayed, Selim and Monir.

Samir Das, another accused in the case was awarded five years jail term.

According to the case, the convicts abducted SSC examinee Suvash Barua on June 21, 1991 from Patiya upazila. Later, they sought ransom from his parents but went on to hack the victim to death and dumped his body on a hill.

Suvash's father filed a case with Patiya Police Station in this regard.
