Siemens to invest 7bn euro in Bangladesh

Says visiting German state minister

Germany will extend political support to achieve solutions to the ongoing Rohingya refugee crisis and their safe, sustainable return to their homeland, said German Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office, Niels Annen, during his meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs AH Mahmood Ali at the state guest house Padma in Dhaka on Thursday.

The German state minister also informed that the German conglomerate Siemens is going to be a major investor in Bangladesh, financing 7 billion euros to generate 8,000MW electricity in Payra.

Annen, who mainly came to Dhaka to sign a contract with Bangladesh for implementation of the e-passport project, assured Bangladesh of his government's continuous support for the management of Rohingya refugees in camps.

He also appreciated the efforts taken by the Bangladesh government for the safety of refugees during monsoon.

The ministers discussed a wide range of issues -- from bilateral trade and investment to Rohingyas to politics and the refugee situation in Europe, according to a Foreign Ministry press release.

Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali also reminded the German state minister of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's pending invitation to the German Chancellor Angela Merkel to visit Bangladesh, adding that Bangladesh is eagerly waiting to receive Merkel.

Bangladeshi Ambassador to Germany Imtiaz Ahmed and German Ambassador in Dhaka Thomas Prinz were present, among others, at the meeting.
