One held for sexually harassing JnU student

Police have arrested one person in a case filed over sexually harassing a female student of Jagannath University (JnU) near Victoria Park in Old Dhaka on March 6.

"Police yesterday arrested one Anowar alias Ana, 33, from Nawab Bari Pukurpar area in Kotwali around 7:30pm," Kazi Wazed Ali, officer-in-charge of Sutrapur Police Station, told The Daily Star.

"Police identified the culprit with the help of CCTV footages," he said, adding that the arrestee confessed to sexually harassing the victim during primary interrogation.

"Anowar is accused in four other cases including those filed for murder and robbery," the OC added.

"Police sent him to court on a seven-day remand prayer for investigation," the OC said, adding that law enforcers are trying to arrest the other accused.

In the complaint filed on the day of the incident with Sutrapur Police Station against two unknown persons, the victim stated that two unknown persons stopped her on the way to JnU in front of Khan Plaza at Old Dhaka's Kolta Bazar area at around 8:30am.

The duo sexually harassed her and quickly fled the scene on a motorcycle, the complaint added.

The case was filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.

Another JnU student harassed sexually

Another female student of Jagannath University (JnU) has been sexually harassed by an unidentified man at Taltola Bus Stand area in the capital's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.

The woman filed a case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station in this connection today, Jane Alam Munshi, officer-in-charge of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, told The Daily Star.

According to the case statement, the JnU student got on a bus of Mirpur Link Limited to go home at Shewrapara in Mirpur from the capital's Nilkhet intersection around 9:20pm last night.

Around 10:00pm, a man sexually harassed her when the bus reached the Taltola Bus Stand area in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.

As the victim protested the incident, the bus driver stopped the vehicle at Taltola Petrol Pump area and the culprit fled the scene quickly.

"The university authorities talked to the law enforcers for taking necessary steps in this regard," said JnU Proctor Mostofa Kamal.
