SC stays bail of ex-BASIC Bank officer

The Supreme Court yesterday stayed till October 31 a High Court verdict that granted permanent bail to sacked deputy managing director of BASIC Bank Fazlus Sobhan in two corruption cases.

Following two petitions filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) seeking stay on the HC verdict of September 8, the apex court asked the ACC to file two leave to appeals with the SC against the HC verdict by October 31.

Now, Fazlus cannot get released from jail, said ACC's lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan.

On January 8, the ACC arrested Fazlus at the capital's Motijheel in two corruption cases involving Tk 58 crores.  The arrest followed the filing of over 50 cases by the ACC in September last year against a number of bankers and borrowers linked with the Tk 5,000-crore BASIC Bank scam that took place between 2010 and 2013.
