SC halts earth filling in water bodies

The Supreme Court yesterday directed the authorities to maintain status quo on earth filling in natural water bodies at Aftabnagar housing project in Rampura area in Dhaka for next six weeks.

Chamber judge of the Appellate Division of the SC Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain gave the order following a petition filed by the Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh seeking stay on a High Court verdict.

Eastern Housing Ltd which has undertaken the project and the government have to maintain status quo on earth filling in natural water bodies at Aftabnagar housing project, HRPB's lawyer Manzill Murshid told The Daily Star. 

He, however, said there is no legal bar for the project to run its construction activities following the SC chamber judge's order.

Advocate Manzill Murshid said the HC last month rejected a petition to stop the earth filling.
