Savar woman killed 'by husband for dowry'

A woman was killed as her husband allegedly slit her throat in their Jamshing residence of Savar outside the capital yesterday.

The deceased, Kalpana Begum, 22, was five months pregnant, said her mother Mahamuda Begum.

Locals handed over Kalpona's husband Hossain Ali, 28, a construction worker by profession, to police.

They said he stayed at home after committing the murder.

Mahamuda said she married her daughter off to Hossain one year ago. At that time, she gave the man Tk 3 lakh as dowry.

A couple of months after the marriage, Hossain and his family members demanded Tk 1.5 lakh more, which they refused to give, said the mother.

Later, Hossain started torturing Kalpana and killed her, she alleged.

The man admitted that he committed the crime as his wife had an “extra marital affair with his elder brother”, said police.

Mohshinul Kadir, officer-in-charge of Savar Model Police Station, said Hossain's parents have been on the run since the incident.
