RU teachers oppose digital attendance monitoring system

The Rajshahi University (RU) authorities postponed the decision of introducing "Digital Attendance Monitoring System" in the face of vehement opposition from different factions of teachers.

On Thursday, a postponement notice signed by Acting Registrar Prof Muhammad Entajul Haque, was sent to the departments and offices concerned in this regard.

Earlier, on September 8, the authorities took the decision about opening the attendance monitoring system on October 1.

The teachers reasoned that they have always been aware of their duties and responsibilities as per the 1973 University Act.

But this system, if implemented, would interfere with the practice of free thinking, and downgrade their status as university teachers, they added.

RU Pro-VC Prof Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan said, "We had decided to launch the system to track of employees' attendance so as to enhance the quality of education and bring transparency to overall activities."

"However, the decision has been postponed, but not cancelled," he added.
