Roommate of the Rajshahi University (RU) student, Motaleb Hossain Lipu who was found dead outside the dormitory he lived in, has been found to be involved in the killing during primary investigation, say police.

The primary evidence suggests that Lipu's roommate Monirul Islam was involved in his murder, said investigation officer Inspector Ashok Kumar Chowhan of Motihar Police Station. "He gave us a few names and information. We are now validating the information."

Monirul, however, did not give any confessional statement under section 164, Inspector Ashok added.

On the morning of October 20, after Lipu's body was found in a drain outside his dormitory Nawab Abdul Latif Hall, police picked up and detained second-year botany student Monirul, who shared room 253 with Lipu.  The first court of Metropolitan Magistrate Mokseda Asgar sent Monirul to jail custody after police on Sunday noon showed Monirul arrested for the murder of Lipu and produced him before it.

Meanwhile, over three hundred students and teachers from different departments of RU yesterday formed a human chain and organised a rally in front of the Mass Communication and Journalism department demanding a fair investigation into the death. A number of teachers and students said they were feeling insecure following frequent unnatural deaths on campus.

Pradip Kumar Pandey, chairman of the department, issuing a seven days' ultimatum, said they would launch a tougher movement if there is no significant progress in the investigation of the murder case by November 1. "We are yet to see any significant progress in the investigation."

Lipu, 22, was a second-year student majoring in mass communication and journalism at RU.

On October 20, Bashir Mollah, an uncle of Lipu, filed a murder case with Motihar Police Station in Rajshahi against unknown people.
