Robber gets death, 6 others life imprisonment for killing student

A tribunal in Dhaka yesterday sentenced a robber to death and six others to life in jail for killing an A-level student more than four years ago.

Bokhtiar Mohammad Latif, a student of Academia, was shot dead by an unidentified gang in the presence of his parents in the capital’s Jatrabari on September 13, 2013.

The death row convict is Mohammad Khalil, 35, while lifers are Akhter, 35, Rustom Ali Howlader, 50, Jalal Uddin, 45, Habib, 55, Sabuj, and Moti, 35.

Judge Momtaz Begum of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-2 handed down the sentence in the presence of the convicts.

According to the prosecution, a gang of eight to nine robbers entered the house of Zahid Al Latif at Uttar Jatrabari at midnight on that day and looted valuables and jewellery from the house. At that time, Bokhtiar chased them and Khalil shot him.

Bokhtiar was immediately taken to a nearby clinic and later to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

The victim’s father filed a murder case with Jatrabari Police Station and police arrested seven robbers on different dates.

On April 13, 2004, detectives pressed charges against seven robbers.
