Road crashes kill 9, injure 5

Seven day labourers die in one incident

Nine people were killed and five others injured in road accidents in two districts yesterday.

In Comilla Sadar, seven day labourers were killed and two others injured as a truck carrying iron sheets and the laboures, hit the road divider and turned turtle in Dhanpur area on Dhaka-Chittagong highway.

The deceased were Shafiqul Islam, 42, his brother-in-law Fazlu Mian, 35, Anwar Rahman, 45, Jahidul Islam, 35, Shahin Mian, 18, Aslam, 30, and Jahidur alias Majhar, 40. They all hailed from Gaibandha.

Following the incident, vehicular movement got halted for four hours on the highway.

The Comilla District administration declared Tk 10,000 for each dead and Tk 5,000 for each injured.

In the capital, three passengers were injured after a bus skidded off the road and plunged into the Kuril Lake under Kuril Flyover as the driver lost control over the vehicle while trying to avoid a collision with a car.

Meanwhile, two people were killed when a truck hit them in Dhor area under Turag Police Station in the capital.

The deceased Abdul Mannan, 26, his friend Motiar Mandal, 28, were the staff of Sundarban Currier Service at Turag office.
