Road accidents kill 5

Agitating mob vandalises a bus, sets it on fire after two university students among three hit by the vehicle in capital

Five people were killed and five others injured in road accidents in three districts yesterday and on Sunday.

In the capital, three people including two private university students were injured when a bus hit a rickshaw carrying them in Uttara area yesterday.

Of the injured, Shamim, a BBA student, and Sumon, a civil engineering student, of International University of Business Agriculture and Technology are undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

However, identity of the third victim, the rickshaw puller, could not be ascertained immediately. He is now hospitalised.

Arman Chowdhury, a fellow of the two students, told The Daily Star that the trio were injured when a Kamarpara-bound bus of Prochesta Paribahan from Abdullahpur hit the rickshaw at 1:00pm.

The vehicle's driver and his helper fled the scene.

As the information spread out, a group of the university's students accompanied by locals vandalised the vehicle's window panes and set fire to it, said Anwara, sub-inspector of Uttara Paschim police.

On information, two fire fighting units from Tongi and Uttara rushed to the spot and doused the fire, said Palash Modak, warehouse inspector of Fire Service and Civil Defence Headquarters. 

In Jessore Sadar, three cattle traders were killed as a bus rammed a human-hauler on the Jessore-Magura highway in Phulerhat area on Sunday night.

The deceased were Laltu Hossain, 40, Ishak Hossain, 58, and Jahangir Patwari, 43. They all hailed from Magura. Illias Ali, officer-in-charge of Jessore Kotwali Police Station, said the accident initially left two cattle traders dead and another injured on the spot.

The injured was admitted at Jessore Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injury.  A case was filed.

In Barisal Sadar, a motorcyclist was killed and two of his co-riders were injured when his vehicle collided head-on with a pickup-van on the Barisal-Bhola highway in Engineering College area yesterday.

The deceased was Riaj Hossain Khan, 25, of the upazila.

The injured Abul Hossain, 55, and Abul Hossain, 50, were sent to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital, said Mahabubul Alom, officer-in-charge of Banar Police Station.

In Dinajpur Sadar, Md Zaman, 38, of Mohabbatpur village was killed as a truck hit his motorcycle in front of Dinajpur Children Park in Eidgah Basti area on Sunday evening.
