Road accidents take 12 lives

At least 12 people were killed and 20 others injured in road accidents across the country yesterday.

In Bogra, five people were killed and seven others injured in a head-on collision between a truck and a human-haulier on Natore-Bogra highway, reports our correspondent.

The incident took place near Birgram Agricultural College around 9:00am, said Sonatan Chakraborty, assistant superintendent of police (Bogra sadar circle).

The deceased are Anwar Hossain, 50, of Khadash Pashchimpara village; Arifur Rahman Sumon, 32, of Kukrul; Mokhlesur Rahman, 52, of Nimgram; Ramjan Ali, 60, of Chakalma; and Faruk Hossain, 30, of Khirkhanda. All were passengers of the human-haulier.

The injured are being treated at a hospital. Of them, four are in critical conditions.

Police seized the vehicles, but the drivers fled away, said Kajal Kumar Nandi, sub-inspector of Kandarhat Highway police outpost. No case was filed.

In Gopalganj, two women and a three-year-old girl were killed and one was injured when a truck hit a battery-run easy bike in Majigati bus stand area around 2:30pm, reports our Faridpur correspondent.

The deceased are Shalina Begum, 48, of Joynagar village; Akamoni Talukder, 20, of Madaripur town, and her daughter Maisha Talukder, said Himal Rana, sub-inspector of Kashiani Police Station. The injured is driver of the easy bike.

Shalina was the headteacher of Joynagar Government Primary School and Akamoni was a teacher at Charmagura Government Primary School in Madaripur.

In Rangpur, two people were killed and 10 others injured after the driver of a passenger bus lost control over the steering and hit a tree beside Rangpur-Bogra Highway in Pirganj upazila around 3:30pm, reports our Dinajpur correspondent.

The deceased could not be identified till filing of the report at 5:00pm. The injured are being treated at a hospital.

In Pirojpur, a member of the district council (ward 6) died after his motorbike was hit by a battery-run three-wheeler in front of Pirojpur fire station around noon, reports our correspondent.

The deceased is Kamruzzaman Sikder alias Mithu, 42. Two passengers of the auto-rickshaw were also injured, said police.

Our Thakurgaon correspondent reports, a biker was killed when a truck hit his motorbike on Thakurgaon-Dinajpur highway. The deceased is Raju Mia, 35, of Dinajpur.
