Meat traders will resume selling red meat in market tomorrow on conclusion of their six-day strike in Dhaka city today.

Robiul Alam, secretary general of Bangladesh Meat Merchant Association (BMMA), announced the postponement of the strike this afternoon.

He, however, said they will decide the next course of action tomorrow following a meeting with the representatives of commerce ministry and Dhaka North City Corporation to discuss their demands.

“Based on the outcomes of the meeting, we’ll announce the next course of action at 5:00pm tomorrow at a press briefing at Gabtoli office,” Rabiul told The Daily Star.

The meat traders went to strike on Monday protesting "overcharging" of fees (hasil) by the lessee at Gabtoli cattle market, the prime source of red meat in Dhaka.

The traders also threatened to go for countrywide strike if their demands are not met by 15 days.

The crisis deepened at the weekend when the demand is usually high for the high-protein commodity in a family meal.

Their demands include cancellation of contract with the current lessee of the Gabtoli cattle market.

Another of their demands is provision for legal import of cattle from Bhutan, India and Nepal.
