Rajuk urges planners to come up with proper city plan
Chairman says 6,636 Uttara flats will be handed over by next March
Rajuk Chairman Abdur Rahman yesterday urged urban planners to prepare proper plans for cities.
Addressing a seminar in Dhaka, he also declared that 6,636 flats of Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha's Uttara Apartment Project will be handed over to the buyers by next March.
He said construction of the flats has almost been completed.
Bangladesh Institute of Planners (BIP) held the seminar at Rajuk office, marking World Town Planning Day 2017, which was observed on November 8.
On the occasion, BIP also staged a rally, debate and cultural programmes.
Rajuk launched the projected in north Uttara area in 2010 to build a total of 20,160 flats in 240 buildings under three blocks.
The project was supposed to be finished by June 2016. Due to a delay, Rajuk changed the deadline several times.
Speaking as the chief guest, Abdur Rahman said after the housing project and other ones are completed, population load on the central Dhaka will be reduced.
He said Rajuk will consult with the departments concerned to widen the roads in all possible places so that those can accommodate more traffic.
Prof Golam Rahman, founder president of BIP, said planning should start at grassroots levels like union and upazila to make those effective.
He also stressed quick implementation of the plans.
Adnan Morshed, a professor of architecture at Brac University, said urban planning should be done in such a way so that it can ensure safe mobility for the dwellers.
Improper plan makes women, especially workers, victims of sexual and physical harassment, he added.
AKM Abul Kalam, president of BIP; Abdul Baten, president of Municipal Association of Bangladesh; and Akter Mahmud, general secretary of BIP, also spoke among others.
