Ragib Ali jailed for illegally holding editorial post
A Sylhet court today sentenced industrialist Ragib Ali and his son to one year imprisonment in a case filed for holding editorial posts of a daily newspaper while being fugitive.
Sylhet Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Saifuzzaman Hiru also fined them Tk 5,000 each, in default of which, they duo will have to serve one month more in jail, our local correspondent reports quoting Mahfuzur Rahman, additional public prosecutor of the court.
Plaintiff’s lawyer Sahiduzzaman Chowdhury said, “The verdict is satisfactory and proved that no one is above the law.”
Defence lawyer Abdul Mukit Opi said they will move to the higher court to get justice.
On September 8 last year, Gias Uddin Talukder, a founding member of Chhatak Upazila Press Club, filed the case as the duo was allegedly holding the positions of editor-in-chief and editor respectively of daily Sylheter Dak while they were absconding in two other cases filed over grabbing of lands of Tarapur Tea Estate in Sylhet.
Earlier on February 2 this year, Ragib Ali and his son Abdul Hye were sentenced to 14 years in prison in another case filed for forging legal documents to grab the endowed property of Tarapur Tea Estate in Sylhet.
