Probe body formed

Director of Department of Health, Chittagong division yesterday formed a probe committee to investigate into the incident of disposal of the body of a newborn into a dumpster by a private hospital in the port city.

The two-member probe body, headed by superintendent of Chittagong General Hospital Dr Asim Kumar Nath, has been asked to submit a report within two working days, said Azizur Rahaman Siddique, civil surgeon of Chittagong.

The other member of the committee is Dr Pranab Chowdury, a paediatric consultant of the same hospital, he added.

Authorities of People's Hospital, a private hospital in the port city, dumped the body of a newborn allegedly without consent of the guardians, in a case of serious professional misconduct on Tuesday morning.

The hospital authorities allegedly did not cooperate with the patients' attendants when they asked for the body of the baby, until police interfered.

Later, they collected the body from Chittagong City Corporation's garbage dumping ground and handed it over to the guardians in the afternoon.
