Govt urged to present strong evidence in support of claim

Civil society leaders yesterday urged the government to prepare for the next facilitative dialogue of the UN climate conference to get better global support on adaptation, loss and damage financing.

They recommended that the government present strong historical and current evidence-based context in support of its claim. In doing this, the government should increase coordination with civil society groups and take preparations jointly so that the country could reap maximum benefits from the global community, they said.

The facilitative dialogue of UN's conference of parties (COP24) will start in January next year. Throughout this dialogue, countries discuss how to measure loss and damage caused by climate change.

The civil society leaders were speaking yesterday at a press conference , said a press release yesterday.

Dr Atiq Rahaman of Bangladesh Center for Advance Study (BCAS), Quamrul Islam Chowdhury of Forum on Environmental Journalist, Bangladesh (FEJB), Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, and Motahar Hossen of Climate Journalist Forum, among others, spoke at the conference, held at Dhaka Reporters Unity.  They said the government could draw global attention and get financial and technological support if it could give evidence. A national dialogue is essential to determine the country's position about the loss and damage issue, they added.
