A sub-inspector of police was shot in the legs when an inspector “accidentally fired” his pistol inside Sergeant Ahad Police Box in the city's Gulistan area yesterday afternoon.

Obaidur Rahman, 35, in-charge of the police box, was transferred to a private hospital after he was given treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Shiblee Noman, additional deputy commissioner of Motijheel Division Police, told The Daily Star that a bullet pierced through Obaidur's thigh, hitting the other one, as inspector Saiful Islam accidently fired his pistol.

Obaidur was rushed to the hospital immediately.

The incident took place when the inspector reinserted the magazine into the pistol and cocked it for checking, said another police officer requesting anonymity.

A four member committee, led by ADC Shiblee Noman, was formed to investigate the incident. It was asked to submit its report by November 30.
