SOHEL MURDER

Police not cooperative

Alleges family; cops say they are trying to arrest the main accused

The family of Nasim Ahmed Sohel, an MBA student of Premier University, Chittagong, who was killed on the campus in 2016, at a press conference in the port city yesterday alleged "non-cooperation" by police.

Police are neither "cordial” to arrest the prime accused, nor "interested” to submit charge-sheet, said the family.

While reading a written statement, Abu Taher, father of Sohel, said, “Whenever we go to the [Chawk Bazar] police station to know the update of the case, the OC (officer-in-charge) assures us that everything is ready and the charge-sheet will be submitted soon.” “The OC has been playing this old record for the last eight to nine months.”

“The OC even asked us to give them information about the location of the prime accused,” said Taher.

“Is it our job to give them information about hideout of the accused or it is the job of police?” he questioned.

In the statement, Taher requested the prime minister and the home minister to take steps in this regard.

Contacted, Nurul Huda, OC of Chawk Bazar Police Station, said police arrested 11 accused -- although they are now on bail.

“We can submit charge-sheet in any day; but we are waiting to arrest the prime accused, Md Ibrahim Sohan, so that punishment of the accused can be ensured through trial,” he claimed, adding, “If the prime accused gives statement before the court under Section 164, the merit of the case would be strong.”

On March 29, 2016, Sohel, a member of Chittagong city unit Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), was stabbed to death allegedly by rival BCL members while he was rehearsing to perform in the farewell and freshers' reception programmes of the university.

According to students and police, the murder was conducted over a feud between two factions over taking control of the programmes.

Sohel was loyal to Chittagong city Mayor and General Secretary of Chittagong city Awami League (AL) AJM Nasir Uddin while the attackers were allegedly loyal to former Chittagong city unit AL president Late ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, they added.

Abu Taher filed a case with Chawk Bazar Police Station mentioning names of 13 people including Sohan, an MBA student of Premier University, and some 20 to 25 unidentified people.
