Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today termed the Dhaka and Chittagong city corporation elections victory for democracy.

“It is a victory of democracy and an outcome of people’s verdict against anarchists and militancy,” said the premier when the newly elected mayors and councillors of Dhaka north and south city corporations met her at Gono Bhaban this evening.

The prime minister thanked the people who assisted to hold the city corporation polls in a free, fair and peaceful manner.

Hasina criticised those who are questioning the fairness and transparency of the polls saying they do not want democracy to progress in the country.

“They are heading with a dishonest aim to make their agenda a success,” she blamed.

Hasina, who is also the president of the ruling Awami League, also called upon the media men to remain in favour of peace and transparency to strengthen the country’s democracy.

She also ruled out allegation of rigging in the election and said if it was done how BNP-backed mayoral candidates Tabith Awal and Mirza Abbar have secured so many votes in the polls.

Annisul Huq, newly elected mayor of DNCC and Sayeed Khokon, of DSCC along with several senior leaders of the ruling Awami League met the prime minister to exchange greetings with her for their victories in the yesterday’s polls.

Several newly elected councilors also went to the PM residence for the similar purpose.

Before meeting the PM, they placed wreaths at the memorial of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Dhanmondi-32 with due respect.
