Pharma boss held over issuing death threat to banker

Police yesterday arrested the managing director of a pharmaceutical company, Libra Infusion Ltd, for allegedly issuing a death threat to Al-Arafah Islami Bank deputy managing director (DMD) when the latter asked him to pay back a loan.

 “We have arrested Libra's MD Roushon Alam around 1:00pm at the company's factory in the capital's Shialbari area following a court warrant,” said Syed Shaheed Alam, officer-in-charge of Rupnagar Police Station.

Police said Roushon took approximately Tk 87 crore in loans from Al-Arafah bank in 2009. Instead of paying back the loan, he gave threats to the bank officials in 2015 when they asked for repayment.

The bank DMD, Fazlul Karim, later filed a general diary with Motijheel Police Station that year. As a police probe found the incident true, the GD was turned into a case, Mushfiqur Rahman, head of legal affairs division of Al-Arafah bank, told The Daily Star yesterday.

Police later submitted the probe report before a Dhaka court and subsequently the trial process started. As Roushon never appeared before the court during the trial process, the court finally ordered his arrest on September 26, said Mushfiqur.

Al-Arafah bank authorities also filed 14 cases against him -- one for loan default and 13 for bounced cheques, he added.
