Old Dhaka’s chemical godowns to be shifted from March: Khokon

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) will launch drives to remove godowns of chemical substance in the old part of Dhaka from March 1, said its Mayor Sayeed Khokon.

A mobile court led by an executive magistrate with the help of Rapid Action Battalion and Fire Service and Civil Defence will conduct the drive, he said at a discussion at Dhaka University (DU).

After the Nimtoli fire tragedy on June 3, 2010, people from different quarters demanded removal of godowns of chemical substance from residential areas in the city.

This is the first ever effort of the government though it had assured to withdraw the wearehouses several times.   

The discussion titled “Fire Hazards in Urban Areas: Challenges & Way Forward” was held at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban on the DU campus.
