North BengalSugar Mill to recall its martyrs today

North Bengal Sugar Mill of Natore will observe “Shaheed Day” today in memory of its staff who were killed during the Liberation War by the Pakistani army.

A procession at dawn will be brought out. Besides, a Qurankhwani, a milad mahfil and a discussion will be held.

On this day in 1971, the then administrator of the mill and freedom fighter Lt Md Anwarul Azim and nearly 150 of its officers and employees were killed beside a pond on the mill premises, says a press release.

Later, the bodies were thrown into the pond.

The Pakistan army took revenge on them as they participated in the war with direct command of Azim and defeated Pak army at Gopalpur Rail Station.

In recognition of the role of Azim, also a Language Movement hero, in the Liberation War, Gopalpur Railway Station was named “Azim Nagar” and the pond “Shaheed Sagar” at the direct instruction of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1974.
