Burning Answer Scripts at CU

No progress in probe yet

Ten days have already elapsed since 709 answer scripts of the computer science and engineering (CSE) department of Chittagong University (CU) were found burnt in a mysterious fire, but there is no visible progress in the investigation so far.

The probe committee formed after the incident could identify neither the motive behind the incident nor the culprits. Though the committee was asked to submit its report within five working days, it extended the period for two more weeks.

Contacted, Prof Mahabubur Rahman, convener of the three-member probe committee, said, “We extended the period for two more weeks to find out the culprits.”

He said they would submit their report within this time.

Meanwhile, in a new development, the CSE department has published schedule for conducting the exams again.

CSE department's Chairperson Prof Md Osiur Rahman said, “We had no other option.”

Earlier on the night of May 16, a total of 709 answers scripts of nine courses from 3rd, 5th and 7th semesters of CSE department were found burnt at the department.

"Miscreants" broke three locks and took the answer scripts to the rooftop of the building and then set fire to those.

Students showed mixed reaction on the decision of taking the examinations again. Some students expressed their dissatisfaction over the decision saying their exams went well and they are not sure about the outcome if they have to sit for the exams again.

On the other hand, some students considered it a second chance, expressing a gesture of relief as their examinations went bad previously.
