Design of Buildings

No approval without sewage treatment plant

Says public works minister

Housing and Public Works Minister Mosharraf Hossain yesterday directed all the authorities under his ministry not to approve any design of a building having no sewage treatment plant (STP).

The minister asked them to add the condition of having STP in the design before its approval, according to a press release.

Mosharraf was speaking as the chief guest at a seminar “Determining the Sewage Treatment Method and Networking in Uttara Apartment Project”.

Public Works Department (PWD) and Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) jointly organised the seminar at the conference room of the department.

The minister said the Chittagong Development Authority (CDA), Khulna Development Authority (KDA), Rajshahi Development Authority (RDA), and Cox's Bazar Development Authority will have to take steps in this regard right now.

Mosharraf said all the rivers around Dhaka were polluted due to a lack of proper waste management.

He said the human excreta released from residential houses are directly going to drains, which is a hindrance to healthy environment.

The minister said a place was earmarked in the Uttara flat project for setting up STP.

Prof Faruk Ahmed of Buet made a presentation on effectiveness of STP.

Rajuk chairman, PWD additional chief engineer, and Rajuk chief engineer (implementation) also spoke.
