Narayanganj police early today recovered the pistol licenced to Niazul Islam which he lost ten days ago during a fierce clash between followers of Narayanganj Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy and Awami League lawmaker Shamim Osman

Niazul Islam, a close aide of Shamim Osman, was one among the persons who brandished guns during an attack on Ivy and her supporters on January 16.

Nizaul’s brother Ripon Khan filed a general diary (GD) on January 17 claiming that the gun was lost during the clash.

On the day of the clash, Ivy and around 50 others were injured as supporters of Shamim Osman attacked her and her followers, leading to a clash on Bangabandhu Road in Narayanganj’s Chashara over eviction of hawkers from footpaths in the city.

The pistol was recovered with 10 rounds of bullets from a flowerpot in front of Church of Saint Paul on the city’s Bangabandhu Road around 2:00am, Abdur Razzak, acting officer-in-charge of Narayanganj Sadar Police Station told our local correspondent.

The gun was wrapped in a polybag when law enforcers recovered it, the OC said.

Police is still trying to arrest Niazul, he added.

The entire area turned into a battlefield as the followers of the two leaders got locked in chase and counter-chase.

Apart from Niazul, Shah Nizam, another close aide of the MP, also flaunted a firearm during the incident. He is the joint secretary of the Narayanganj city AL and also the secretary of district Community Police.
