NGO official shot in Dhaka

Six unidentified miscreants shot an NGO official and mugged Tk five lakh from his possession in Uttara of Dhaka.

The victim, Abidul Islam, 29, is an employee of a Kuwait-funded non-government organisation named Saza Trading Corporation.

The NGO facilitates construction of mosques and madrassas with the funds sent from Kuwait.

A group of six muggers shot on his left leg and snatched away his hand-bag containing Tk five lakh at road no-12 in Uttara, Sector-12, around 12:45pm today.

The culprits, riding on three motorbikes, were wearing helmets, hence the police could not immediately identify them through the CCTV footage, Abdur Razzak, officer-in-charge (OC-investigation) of Uttara Paschim Police Station, told The Daily Star.

Police are investigating the matter, the OC added.

According to victim’s brother, Sohrawardi Alam, Abidul went to the Islami Bank branch at the Sonargaon Janapad Road with his friend Abul Kalam to withdraw some money on behalf of the NGO.

While returning to his office from the bank they got attacked by the criminals, he added.
