Youths should prepare for tech revolution

Speakers say at science congress

The country’s young generation should develop themselves to fulfil needs of the 21st century, amidst tremendous scientific developments in the world, speakers at a congress said yesterday.

They said the 4th industrial revolution is around the corner, and it will bring disruptive technologies that will completely change the way people live.

They were speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the three-day 4th Young Scientist Congress at the capital’s National Museum of Science and Technology Bhaban.

With the theme “Young scientists for achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs)”, Bangladesh Academy of Sciences (BAS) has organised the congress.

Speaking there, Science and Technology Affairs Minister Yeafesh Osman said the Awami League-led government introduced the goal of “Digital Bangladesh” in 2009 and since then it is working hard to achieve that.

Md Munir Chowdhury, the science museum’s director general, alleged that corruption in different institutions is causing obstruction to attaining SDGs.

Munir said he visited many factories in the country recently, and none has fulfilled their pollution reduction criteria. He said factories are being run amid huge corruption and are not using the best technologies to tackle pollution.

BAS Secretary Prof Haseena Khan said alongside foreign participants, the best young scientists from the country are attending the event.

BAS President Dr AK Azad Chowdhury, the congress organising committee chairperson Dr KM Sultanul Aziz and Union Bank Managing Director Omar Farooque also spoke at the event.
