Freak microbus accident kills father in front of son

A father and son were making conversation by the highway, reunited after a while, when a freak road accident claimed the life of one of them, right in front of the other's eyes.

The tragedy unfolded in Kalkini upazila of Madaripur on Tuesday night.

Ohidur Rahman Hawlader, 48, a farmer and businessman of the upazila, died after being run over by the very microbus that brought his son, Bayezid Hawlader, 22, from Dhaka.

Bayezid studies at a university in Dhaka. To attend a programme at his village home, he was on the way to Maichpara village of the upazila. He was travelling in a microbus with one of his relatives, Moniruzzaman, 42.

When they reached Birmohon area of Kalkini, a few miles from the village, the vehicle broke down. To fix the problem, the driver got down and went to the back of the vehicle, putting Moniruzzaman behind the steering wheel.

In the meantime, Bayezid called his father and asked him to come over to the place on a motorcycle and take him home.

“After father reached the spot, we were talking, standing in front of the microbus. All of a sudden, the microbus started moving, hit my father and run him over,” said Bayezid.

A seriously injured Ohidur was soon taken to Madaripur Sadar Hospital, but on-duty doctor there declared him dead.

Md Nasiruddin, sub-inspector of Dashar Police Station, said, “On information, we rushed to the spot and seized the microbus.”

The driver, however, fled.

The body of Ohidur was handed over to the family.
