Youth found murdered in under-construction building in Gazipur

Family suspects local extortionists committed the crime

A youth was found murdered in their under-construction building in Gazipur city yesterday.

A local youth named Shakil, 30, was detained in this connection, said Pubail Police Station Officer-in-Charge Nazmul Haque Bhuiyan.

Imtiaz Ahmed Ifty, 20, a first year student of Dhaka Polytechnic Institute, went there from their Nondibari rented house the night before to guard construction materials, said his uncle Mizanur Rahman.

Windows and doors were yet to be set up in the building in Harbaid area, he said.

With no response to phone calls, his family members went there and noticed the body in a room, he added.

On information from them, police rushed to the spot. Ifty's throat was slit, said the OC.

Besides, there were marks of injuries inflicted with sharp weapons on his chin and left eye, said the officer.

Mizanur, who filed a murder case with the station accusing unnamed persons, said Shakil once demanded Tk 10,000 as extortion money from him. But he was given Tk 1,000.

After that, construction materials were often found stolen from the building, he said.

Besides, delinquent local youths used to take drugs in and around the under-construction building on a regular basis, he said, adding that no one from their family or local people dared to resist them.

The police officer said they are investigating the murder.

The body was sent to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College hospital morgue for autopsy.

Ifty lived with his mother, maternal uncle and one of his cousins, said the family. His elder brother lives in Chattogram, said the family.

His father, who was a policeman, died one year ago, they added.
