World Rivers Day today

Like elsewhere in the world, World Rivers Day will be observed in the country today.

The day is a celebration of waterways. It highlights many values of rivers and strives to increase public awareness and encourages improved stewardship of rivers.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages on the occasion.

The president hoped that strong steps of National River Conservation Commission would play an important role in the country's economic development.

The premier said observation of the day would create awareness among people. She urged all to come forward to save rivers.

In 2005, the United Nations launched “Water for Life Decade”. Following that, river enthusiasts have been celebrating the day annually on the last Sunday of every September.

Bangladesh has been observing the day since 2010.
